One of these days, I was talking to a good friend of mine about his computing on the road needs. Just like me, he's not usually on a budget, but always likes to get the best tool for a certain task, and if that involves grabbing a second hand PIII laptop, so be it. Why such a oldie? Well, let me explain...

Lenovo IdeaPad Y550

Just like me, he has a decent desktop computer that he uses for most of the time, and the only needs on the road should be checking email, messaging, and browsing the Web. For about $400, there's not much to get - it's the tiny Eee PC or something like that, but my idea was "Lenovo SH," and it seems it's a pretty good one. After all, I would trust a 7 years old Lenovo more than a brand new netbook - no offense intended to any of the netbooks on the market!

If you think you need more than just an old laptop to move around with, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y550 could easily fulfill all your dreams, only that it doesn't cook and it doesn't look hot in bikinis...

After being announced last winter, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y550 took some time to make it to the market. Initially, it should have been here since March, but it wasn't. Now, the 15.6-inch notebook is here, coming in six models, for prices between $669 and $1,199.

The most common features are these:

- 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor (for the base model)
- integrated Intel X4500 graphics processor (NVIDIA's GeForce G105M chipset with 512MB of dedicated video memory in the two higher end models)
- 1366x768 widescreen display
- integrated dual-layer DVD burner
- 2 GB of memory
- 250 GB hard drive
- Windows Vista Home Premium preloaded(this spoils the entire beauty of it, but that's life... you can't always get what you want)
- Wi-Fi as standard, with Bluetooth V2.1 with EDR only in the two higher end models

Leaving aside the excellent looks of the Y550(I don't know about you, but I love its design), you should also take into account the fact that the most powerful model, priced at $1,199, as I mentioned earlier, comes with a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive, and I really think this is a great deal.

You know about pricing, you know about the innards of the Lenovo IdeaPad Y550, and since the beast is shipping as we speak... go for it, if a new, affordable and reliable laptop is what you're looking for!
