Globat Overview

We've been monitoring Globat for over a year now. In fact, we even host a sample site with Globat for your evaluation. Their service has improved dramatically since last year. They provide a very good hosting package with great customer support at a very attractive price.

Delivery

Lets take this certain picture gallery website for example. Its been online with Globat ever since October 2002. Webmaster chose Globat at that time because they offered a large amount of disk space and bandwidth. Currently the site has 150 JPG pictures with a total size of 10 MB (pictures load very fast). With approximately 300 visitors a day, the site in question uses about 5 GB of bandwidth each month. In order to reach the 75 GB bandwidth limit, they could either improve their traffic to 4,500 visitors a day, or add up to 2,250 of similar pictures. You can see how much place there is to grow.

Company Background

Globat is the fastest growing web host today. It was founded by Ben Neumann in December 2001. We have actually spoken with Ben in order to find out more information concerning his company. Ben has been in the web hosting business since 1994. He has founded Icom (popular web host) which was later sold to Interliant (another web host) in 1998. Icom is now owned by Interland (yes, another web host). Ben has gained a lot of experience in the web hosting business and is capable of building scalable web hosting networks.

Generous Amount of Storage and Bandwidth

Most web hosting users use less than 50 MB of disk space. Therefore 2,500 MB of disk space is just too much for most users. The 75 GB bandwidth should be worth a lot more than $10. From Ben (Globat's founder), we understand that Globat is buying huge amounts of bandwidth from Verio and Level 3 in bulk, so Globat is able to provide more bandwidth to their customers. He also stated that they are not as greedy as other companies. They are able to live with a lower profit margin since they are running a very streamlined operation.

Customer Support

Getting to the their support start page will really amaze you. They have a large support staff and getting support is quite easy and effective.

1. Support Ticket - This is the most important way to get support. You just create a support ticket and they will get back to you regarding your issue. All you need is a working email address. Support tickets are tracked, so they can easily be followed up. Although sending your email directly to support@globat.com will also create a ticket automatically, it is recommended that you use the ticket submission form so you'll be reminded to include some basic information, i.e. your domain name and the category of your issue.

2. Live Chat Support - This was introduced in March 2003. Live chat is effective because you get an immediate response from one of their support staff. It is not 24/7 and available only in the business hours (Email, Tickets & Phone support are 24/7).

3. Toll-Free Support - This was introduced in July 2003. For technical support, the number is 1-877-2GLOBAT and it is available 24/7. For sales and billing, the number is 1-323-874-9000 and is available Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm EST. The toll-free numbers are only available to the US and Canada. For international customers, you may use 1-323-874-9000.

4. Tutorials - There are around 50 tutorials categorized into 4 different groups. They show you how to setup your email client, transfer files to your website with FTP, manage your account with the control panel and modify DNS records for your domain name. Most of the tutorials are in Flash videos while some are in text and images.

5. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Contains over 100 FAQ and answers under many different categories. One of the important sections you might be interested in is the 'Before Signing Up' section which contains many answers to the most commonly asked presale questions.

Highlights

1. Globat Command Console (GCC) - Introduced in February 2004, GCC is Globat's new control panel software for their customers. The 6 basic functions in GCC are file manager, web-based email, managing email accounts, MySQL database, protected directories and viewing web statistics (AWStats). GCC is based on the Plesk control panel, which they have been using since the beginning. GCC provides easy navigation and is a lot faster then Plesk. However, not all functions in Plesk have been implemented in GCC yet. We will definitely see more features added in the future. Plesk is still available and you can choose to login to either GCC or Plesk in the login page.

2. Unlimited MySQL Databases - There are no limits on how many MySQL databases you use. There is also no size quota.

3. Paypal Payments - Globat has also setup their system to accept payment by PayPal. Not many hosts are willing to accept PayPal payments.

4. Free Domain - If you prepay for 1 year, you will get a new domain name for free. If you prepay for 2 years instead, the domain name is registered for 2 years.

Sony has unveiled two very non-pricey, highly affordable point and shoot Cyber-shots with high end specs. The DSC-TX1 and DSC-WX1 are both new additions to Sony’s Cyber-shot range. Sony has blessed the TX1 and WX1 with a back-illuminated CMOS sensor, the Exmor R. If you’re wondering why the duo will have near DSLR specs, its mainly because of its sensor. Their sensors will be based on those found in Sony’s DSLRs, this promises to deliver optimal low-light performance without help from a flash or tripod - something that not many point and shoots are doing so well at the moment.

wx1-front

Both 10.2 megapixel TX1 and WX1 will be under the stunning budget price of $380. The $350 WX1 features the exact same G Lens, low-light optimized Exmor R CMOS sensor and Sweep Panaroma mode as seen in Sony’s $500 HX1 mega zoom camera.

tx1-inside

On the other hand, the rather slimmer $380 Cyber-shot TX1 falls in step with other T series model with a 3.0 inch touch screen on the back panel. Though without the Sony G Lens on the WX1, it still boasts low-light optimized Exmor R CMOS Sensor and Sony’s new Twilight mode. Twilight mode works simply by combining a range of shots taken at various exposures to produce photos with greater dynamic range, this again hopes to enable users to get the most out of low-light photography. The TX1 has a shutter button, but all other controls are via the touch screen, which also lets you flick through images with a finger.

Both new Cyber-shot cameras will be able to record 720p HD (MPEG-4 @ 30fps).

Sony Press Release

SONY DEBUTS WORLD’S FIRST DIGITAL STILL CAMERAS WITH BACK-ILLUMINATED “EXMOR R” CMOS SENSOR TECHNOLOGY
New Cyber-shot® Cameras Excel in Low-Light Performance

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 5, 2009 – Sony today announced two new Cyber-shot® cameras (DSC-TX1 and DSC-WX1 models) that provide unprecedented advances in low-light performance with approximately twice the sensitivity of cameras with traditional image sensors.

These Cyber-shot cameras are the first to employ Sony’s new “Exmor R” back illuminated CMOS sensor technology to improve shooting in low-light scenarios, enhancing image clarity and drastically reducing grain.

“With these new “Exmor R” CMOS sensor cameras, Sony has vastly improved the customer experience for taking pictures with digital still cameras in low-light scenarios,” said Phil Lubell, director of the digital imaging business at Sony Electronics. “We’ve all taken pictures in dimly lit situations, like blowing out candles on a birthday cake, and the results were grainy and unclear. By redesigning the way these cameras capture light, Sony is leading the industry by creating this easy way to take amazingly clear, vibrant photos in low lighting scenarios.”

“Exmor R” Sensor Optimizes Low-Light Performance

Conventional image sensor architecture has required wires and other circuit elements to be positioned above the light sensitive photo-diodes, limiting the imager’s light gathering capability. Positioning these elements behind the photo-diodes, Sony’s “Exmor R” image sensors can gather more light, resulting in approximately twice the sensitivity compared to conventional sensors.

To further extend low-light shooting performance, the TX1 and WX1 cameras incorporate the hand-held twilight and anti-motion blur multi-shot modes introduced in Sony’s breakthrough Cyber-shot DSC-HX1. Using “Exmor R” CMOS sensor’s high speed, these modes capture six separate images in less than a second and utilize Sony’s BIONZ™ processor to combine the shots into a single image of extraordinary detail and low noise.

Combining the “Exmor R” technology with hand-held twilight and anti-motion blur modes delivers a breakthrough in low-light photography. Users can now capture images of stunning detail and low noise in scenes with no more than candlelight—without flash or the need of a tripod.

Innovative Sweep Panorama™ and High-Speed Shooting

In addition to their breakthrough low light performance, these new cameras also include Sony’s Sweep Panorama and 10 frames per second burst shooting features, which were introduced with the Sony® DSC-HX1 camera. The TX1 and WX1 cameras offer these features in smaller, more compact bodies that match nearly any unique style.

Capturing wide landscapes is as easy as “press and sweep.” Sweep Panorama mode lets you reach beyond the traditional wide-angle lens and capture breathtaking shots. Using the high-speed “Exmor R” CMOS sensor, the cameras shoot continuously while you sweep across the scene. Using the BIONZ imaging processor, they automatically stitch the pictures together to create one stunning panoramic photo.

The TX1 and WX1 Cyber-shot models can take up to 185 and 256-degree panorama shots respectively in one easy press-and-sweep motion with an image size of 7152 x 1080 (ultra wide horizontal).

Advanced Technology and Compact Design

While the HX1 camera is a well-rounded solution for customers who are looking for high-zoom and speed in a smaller size than a DSLR, the TX1 and WX1 cameras are made for an audience that wants advanced technology in an even more compact design.

With its slim profile of just 16.5mm, the 10.2 mega-pixel TX1 offers streamlined, distinguished curves for a sophisticated look appealing to the fashion-oriented who are also looking for great performance. This model features a new operation on the touch panel that lets you scroll through images with an effortless “flick” of your finger and directly access menus on the 3-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus™ display.

With a Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® lens, the TX1 camera lets you focus as little as 0.4 inches from your subject for extraordinary close-up shots. The 4x telescopic zoom is perfect for capturing far-away subjects, and Sony’s Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization helps overcome camera shake.

The 10.2 mega-pixel WX1 camera has a 2.7-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus display and is just over three quarters of an inch thin—an ideal choice for DSLR owners who also want to carry a compact, high performance digital still camera.

The WX1 camera features a Sony G lens with an extraordinary wide angle 24-120mm 5x optical zoom. This lens’ f/2.4 maximum aperture offers nearly twice the light gathering capability of conventional lenses, and works together with the “Exmor R” imager and low-light shooting modes to provide low-light photography beyond the abilities of other compact cameras.

Tech Savvy Cameras

These cameras include the most recent Sony technology, including, Intelligent Auto (iAuto) mode which, recognizes scenes, lighting conditions and faces, and adjusts settings resulting in clearer images, faces with more natural skin tone and less blur; Face Detection that detects up to eight faces and optimizes focus, flash, exposure and white balance and intelligent Scene (iSCN) that delivers nine Scene Selection modes to quickly adjust for specific shooting conditions.

Pet mode is a new Sony feature that minimizes blur when shooting moving pets. This new mode also reduces glowing pet red-eye.

Additionally, the cameras have technologies Sony Cyber-shot customers have come to expect. These include Smile Shutter™ technology that automatically captures a smile, dynamic range optimization (DRO) that improves exposure and contrast, intelligent Auto Focus that captures fleeting moments and HD video capability that records HD movies in 720p high definition MPEG4 format.

With HD video capability, these cameras record HD movies in 720p high definition MPEG4 format for stunning large-screen home movie playback. You can record up to 29 minutes (or up to 2GB file size) in 720p format.

Pricing and Availability

The TX1 camera will be available in silver, gray, pink and blue this September for about $380. The WX1 camera will be available in black this October for about $350. Pre-sales will start in August. The cameras and a range of accessories will be available online at sonystyle.com, at Sony Style® retail stores (http://www.sonystyle.com/retail), at military base exchanges and at authorized dealers nationwide.

Sleek styling, powerful performance and the smoothest, sharpest BRAVIATM picture ever
Motionflow 200Hz family expands with the addition of the new BRAVIATM Z5500, showcasing sleek design fused with the latest eco-aware features

Today Sony unveils a key addition to its BRAVIA™ television range, the Z5500, which incorporates the latest in cutting edge TV technology. Equipped with Sony’s pioneering Motionflow 200Hz and Image Blur Reduction technology, the Z5500 produces not only incredibly smooth motion and sharp fast-moving images, but also powerful sound when combined with the new HT-CT500 Home Theatre system. This model was specifically designed to perfectly complement the BRAVIA™ Z5500, providing a truly immersive Full HD home entertainment experience.

Sports and fast-moving action look better than ever. Using sophisticated algorithms, Motionflow 200Hz calculates three additional frames for every original, upping the frame rate from 50 to 200 per second. The picture is further enhanced by Image Blur Reduction, which ‘cleans’ the original frames before new frame insertion for even sharper images with reduced motion blur. The result is the smoothest and clearest motion reproduction ever achieved by BRAVIA™ TVs.

Taking Sony’s distinctive ‘draw the LINE’ design concept – which focuses on enhancing your overall viewing experience without distracting you from what is on screen – one step further, the BRAVIA™ Z5500 frame is as minimalistic as possible, removing any unnecessary excess and keeping only the essential lines of the frame. The result is a television that not only looks effortlessly elegant, but is also incredibly stylish, providing the perfect gateway to lose yourself in the stunningly realistic Full HD picture.
To complete the ultimate visual package, the BRAVIA™ Z5500 features BRAVIA Engine™ 3, the latest generation of this unique Sony HD picture enhancement technology. It intelligently analyses and optimises video signals from any HD or SD source, enhancing picture details, contrast and colour reproduction for breathtakingly natural results. BRAVIA Engine™ 3 is complemented by Live Colour Creation; this additional processing technology ensures the Z5500 is able to display incredibly vivid, lifelike colours, making you feel you are experiencing that movie or big match firsthand.

“The unique blend of advanced technology and leading design showcased in the BRAVIA™ Z5500 means that you can enjoy crystal-clear, amazingly smooth fast-moving images with Motionflow 200Hz, along with atmospheric sound from the HT-CT500 home theatre speaker”, says Hiroshi Sakamoto, Vice President, TV Marketing Europe. “We design our TVs to ensure that they contain the latest features and advanced technology, bringing the real world to your living room for a truly realistic and immersive viewing experience, without any compromise to look and feel.”

Available in three screen sizes (40-inch, 46-inch and 52-inch), the Z5500 is also DLNA™ certified, allowing it to be seamlessly networked via the built-in Ethernet port with other DLNA™ enabled devices within the home, even if they’re not in the same room, such as your VAIO® PC or Giga Juke™ music server. Using your BRAVIA™ remote control, you can quickly access content on connected devices and even control playback functions like pause, fast-forward and rewind; perfect for streaming your MP3s around the home. It’s also a convenient way to view your digital image collection, watch downloaded movies or camcorder clips, all in Full HD, and without the hassle of tangled wires cluttering your room.

For the first time, AppliCast™ lets you access an exciting range of online services without having to switch on your PC. Connected via the Ethernet port to the Internet, the Z5500 can display your favourite RSS feeds, from international news and share prices to weather forecasts, horoscopes, celebrity gossip, and more. Also accessed via the easy-to-understand XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) on-screen interface, there’s a choice of handy ‘widgets’ that can be simultaneously viewed while watching your favourite TV shows. Alongside a pre-installed analogue clock, calendar and ‘How To Use AppliCast™’ guide, the Z5500 can download other networked widgets from a list that includes: calculator, alarm, world clock and picture frame online, which allows you to display an image that is stored online when the TV is in Picture Frame Mode.

The Z5500 also comes equipped with CI Plus interface, which offers greater security for broadcasters, enabling them to offer premium content directly to your TV without the need for a separate set-top box. CAMs (Conditional Access Modules) using CI Plus will be available from broadcasters and cable operators supporting this TV . There’s also an integrated MPEG 4 AVC HD tuner for enjoying your favourite HD broadcasts without the need for a set-top box.

In addition, the television boasts BRAVIA sync technology, which enables you to control your BRAVIA™ TV, home theatre system and Blu-ray Disc player with just one remote control, meaning you can control all three products with the touch of a single button.

Continuing the emphasis of the 2009 BRAVIA™ range on incorporating energy saving innovations, the Z5500 series consumes 25 to 35% less power on average than comparable 2008 models. It also has a series of eco-aware features, which are grouped together under the new ECO setting on the XMB™ menu, for easy and convenient access.

These features include an auto shut-off function, which means the BRAVIA™ Z5500 will automatically enter standby mode (less than 0.19W) if no input signal or operation is carried out over a set period of time, meaning energy is not wasted unnecessarily. Also included is an integrated light sensor, which adjusts backlight brightness depending on the ambient room light to reduce power consumption. Complementing the light sensor, there’s an optional power saving mode that reduces backlight illumination levels for comfortable viewing in dim light.

The Z5500 features an ‘Idle TV’ mode, which functions like a PC screensaver, switching to a standby mode to conserve energy if there’s been no user activity for a preset time, which is useful if you’re inclined to drop off during late-night movies. The PC Power Management mode switches automatically to standby if no signal is received from a connected computer for 30 seconds. It’s handy if you’ve connected the TV to your computer for some big-screen gaming action and want to take a few minutes break without switching everything off. Also included is a unique easy-to-use electronic on-screen operation manual that reduces the need for printed paper instructions.

Finally, the Z5500 also features the Energy Saving Switch, which not only saves energy, but helps cut electricity bills down even further. Other televisions draw a small amount of power even when they’re in standby mode or switched off. Flipping a conveniently-placed switch on the BRAVIA™ Z5500 turns the set off completely, just like pulling the plug. Switch it back on again and the TV returns immediately to its previous state.

Create the complete home entertainment experience, with the latest Sony home theatre system

Providing the perfect partner to the sleek lines of the Z500, Sony’s new home theatre system, the HT-CT500, is seamlessly tailored for dynamic surround sound with an unobtrusive design. Thanks to a new Graphical User Interface, which allows easy operation of the volume control, input selector and other settings, the subwoofer can be hidden away. Whether you choose to wall-mount your BRAVIA™ or place it on a table-top, the stand-alone speaker bar lets you create a unique look. Perfectly-matched to attach to the base of the BRAVIA™ Z5500 40″ or 46″ TV, the HT-CT500 can also be left free-standing on the shelf below any BRAVIA™ TV series. This 3.1 channel speaker system delivers 400W of total output power, whilst also included are an additional three HDMI™ inputs for enhanced connectivity to your HD devices. Finally, there is Sony’s award winning S-Force PRO Front Surround technology for an incredible theatre quality experience.

Apart from netbooks which are gaining a substantial popularity over regular sized laptops in the recent years. Gaming laptops have also been popular, most likely because of their advantage in being able to move abouts whenever necessary. What we have below are two of the latest gaming laptops revealed by Acer and Clevo at the CeBIT this year.

acer-aspire-8930-gaming-laptop-cebit-01.jpg

clevo-m980nu-gaming-laptop-cebit-02.jpg

As for the specs fo the Acer Aspire 8930, its a 18.4-inch that boasts Intel’s new Core 2 Quad Mobile Q9000 CPU, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 500GB 7200 SATA hard drive and NVIDIA GeForce 9700M GT graphics with 512MB of dedicated video memory. It will however cost $1800, which is quite alot for an Acer. Check out some pictures of the Acer Aspire 8930 below…

Clevo’s M980NU is another rather large gaming PC also sporting a 18.4″ LCD. The LCD features full HD with a 1920 x 1080 pixel format. You will know when this beast is powered on because there are blue LEDs everywhere. Notebook Check took a preproduction model for a ride and checked the massive 18.4″ LCD. The LCD showed a decent brightness of 220 cd/m2 in the middle but they did mention that light fall-off toward the edges were a bit pronounced. Contrast ratio was a very good 595:1. This monsterous machine has dual Nvidia GTX 280M with mobile quad-core CPU support, so you gamers will know what that means - hybrid graphics modes! What’s strange is that nothing has been mentioned on how much memory it will come with, but we suspect nothing short of 4GB of RAM. In addition to this, the M980NU is also equipped with three HDD ports, touch sensors, HDMI, TV turner and fingerprint security. The M980NU to me is probably not just an incredible gaming PC but an entertainment heaven!

Gadgets that aim to enable and enhance gaming experiences are increasingly becoming more popular. The world of gaming has had its share of HD needs. With vastly improved graphics and video rendering, it seems apparent that the need for complimenting peripherals such as mice and surfaces come out with their own line of high definition peripherals.

steelseries-xai-laser-mouse_5

And it looks like SteelSeries has done just that as they launch the following:

  • SteelSeries Xai Laser Mouse
  • SteelSeries Kinzu Optical Mouse
  • SteelSeries 9HD Hard Plastic Surface

All have their own specific design but were overall designed to provide advantage and comfort for the gamers who have been hooked on to advanced peripheral gadgets for better game play. The SteelSeries Xai, SteelSeries Kinzu and the SteelSeries 9HD will be available by August 2009. The trio will bare a pricetag of $79, $34, and $34, respectively.

nokia-x6

Nokia’s recently announced handset, the Nokia X6, looks set to take over the XpressMusic line by offering you up to 35 hours of continuous music playback before requiring a trip to the nearest power outlet. In addition, the 32GB of internal memory alongside a memory expansion slot clearly places this on par with the iPhone when it comes to being a portable audio player, barring the user experience, of course. It does claw some ground by including a slick 3.2″ finger touch interface though, boasting a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio that is optimized for photos, videos and browsing. You can also connect to the Ovi Store directly, letting you remain connected to a maximum of 20 friends and virtual communities always through your homescreen. The Nokia X6 will retail for 450 Euros before taxes and subsidies, as the Finnish cellphone manufacturer prepares to get it ready for shipping come Q4 2009.

For those of you who are sick of the convenience of Bluetooth earpieces and want to live your dream of talking to your fingers like pretend phone from your childhood should look into this concept device.

Designed by BCK, a team from Argentina, its a very simple concept. The user talks to the hand using the yellow ring that fits halfway down the little finger, and then listens with the pink ring on the thumb. (Why is the thumb look like its been drawn on the picture?)

This is one concept that probably won’t catch on, ever. Unless you can make a display to put on the palm. Maybe there is some alternate reality where this technology came into fruition. Enjoy this poem after the jump.

One ring to hear your calls,
One ring to talk in,
Two rings to take your calls,
and with the Bluetooth bind them.

Okay, it didn’t really rhyme, but somehow I couldn’t get The Lord of the Rings out of my head when I saw this device. In the end, though, I decree this device as “silly”.

Of course, I never equated The Lord of the Rings with anything silly, even though there is a scene where a dwarf, and elf, and Viggo Mortensen are running across the plains in really fruity costumes.

Well, you never know what’s going to be a hit and what will be a dud.

When we see the word unlimited in a web hosting ad we naturally think it means no limits. Web hosting companies rely heavily on this. While searching for a web hosting service you will find that unlimited storage and unlimited bandwidth are popular selling tools. Hosting providers also offer unlimited domains.

Let's take a look at each of these advertised unlimited hosting services.

Unlimited Storage/Space:

Hosting companies need servers that have hard disk associated with each server. Think of the personal computer as a server, and your hard drive as the storage unit. How many hard drives you can connect is limited by the computers' (server) capacity for hard drives. Thus, each web hosting provider is in a sense limited by the amount of servers it has, the number of hard disk each server has, and each associated hard disks capacity. The more servers and associated hard disk a hosting company has the more storage space it can offer its customers.

Web servers can be stored at data centers. However, owning and managing a data center is costly. It has special requirements; it needs to be in a climate controlled environment, and resistant to natural disasters. Physical security is also very important.

Unlimited Bandwidth:

Web hosting companies understand that websites that have sound, video, flash content, Virtual Reality (VR) etc., demand bandwidth. However, bandwidth may be limited by up link capacity; up link capacity is important because it is the data flow per second. The amount of data a websites' visitors can access is based on the bandwidth.

Unlimited Domains:

Web hosting service plans now include unlimited domains. Customers get a single web hosting account, but can set up one or more than one website. This is very convenient for businesses with several websites because they can maintain several domains under a single account,. With one web hosting account for all of your websites you can control all of your websites using the same control panel. Managing a single website or several websites is becoming easier. Web hosting providers are constantly upgrading their features and control panels.

How big is unlimited web hosting? Very big. Although, unlimited sounds like infinity, what it may really mean is that the web hosting provider can offer services that “exceed” a customers actual needs.

For example, if a typical website requires 10MB of storage space/10GB of bandwidth/service for more than one website, and the web hosting provider can provide 300GB of storage space/3000GB bandwidth/for unlimited domains then in a way that can be interpreted as unlimited web hosting.

Also, if a web hosting company owns its own access line it probably can provide the unlimited service it offers. On the other hand, if it does not then it may not be able to live up to its promises.

Selling unlimited web hosting services is big business. The best way to understand what unlimited services you are truly getting with a plan is to read the Terms of Service, including the fine print and clauses.

PANASONIC INTRODUCES ITS LATEST LUMIX G SERIES DIGITAL CAMERA – THE LUMIX DMC-GF1
The LUMIX GF1, the world’s smallest and lightest system digital camera with built-in flash*, packs powerful DSLR and HD video capabilities into a sleek and easy-to-use compact body

Secaucus, NJ (September 2, 2009) – Today, Panasonic announced the new LUMIX DMC-GF1, the latest addition to the award-winning LUMIX G Series, which debuts as the world’s smallest and lightest system digital camera with a built-in flash*. The LUMIX DMC-GF1 distinguishes itself from previous models with its elegant, compact design reminiscent of classic film cameras, yet builds on Panasonic’s success with the revolutionary LUMIX G Series of digital interchangeable lens system cameras based on the Micro Four Thirds system standard.

With its compact size, user-friendly design and ability to record High Definition (HD) video and take professional-quality photos, the LUMIX GF1 continues to redefine digital photography standards. “Panasonic changed the digital camera industry with the world’s first Micro Four Thirds digital camera, the LUMIX G1 – a compact “DSLR-like” digital camera that produces exceptional image quality. Then, as we continued to raise the innovation bar, Panasonic launched the LUMIX GH1, adding full High Definition 1080p video recording with continuous auto focus,” said David Briganti, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. “The new LUMIX GF1 continues the evolution and is the perfect addition to our LUMIX G Series, as its sophisticated, small body makes it easier and more convenient to carry. The GF1 is ideal for point-and-shoot consumers looking to step-up to DSLR-quality or for current DSLR users who want greater convenience without compromising performance quality or creative flexibility.”

With its lightweight body, the LUMIX GF1 provides experienced photographers with the ideal digital camera to carry with them at all times. Like its predecessors in the LUMIX G Series, the LUMIX GF1 eliminates the pentaprism found in traditional interchangeable lens cameras. Thus, this mirror-free structure allows Panasonic to dramatically reduce both size and weight. Though small in size, the LUMIX GF1 does not compromise in advanced features.

The LUMIX GF1 thoroughly optimizes the advantages of a system camera to ensure high performance, whether capturing photos or HD video. The LUMIX DMC-GF1 can record 1280 x 720 High Definition video in AVCHD Lite, a format that enables longer recording times. With a dedicated video record button, capturing video is convenient and easy. The LUMIX GF1 can also record HD Motion JPEG in 1280 x 720 and other video recording formats include: QVGA, VGA and WVGA. The LUMIX GF1 has a unique Movie Program Mode that allows consumers to adjust the depth-of-field while shooting in HD video, so background and foreground can be blurred to give creative effects – something typically only possible with expensive professional camcorders.

The LUMIX DMC-GF1 includes the new My Color mode, which includes seven preset effects – Expressive, Retro, Pure, Elegant, Monochrome, Dynamic Art, Silhouette and Custom – all which let users manually set the color, brightness and saturation levels. With the Live View function, users can see how these settings will effect the photo before they shoot, making it easier to capture the exact mood or atmosphere desired. For even more elaborate effects, users can choose from a total of nine Film modes, and set the contrast, sharpness and saturation levels for each. A custom function lets users store their favorite settings in memory. Furthermore, the exposure meter can be displayed in other shooting modes and the correlation between shutter speed and aperture is shown, with a color-coded warning that alerts users when the settings are not in the proper range.

For those users not quite comfortable with extensive manual and creative controls, the LUMIX GF1 provides a user-friendly setting that can address a beginner’s comfort level, while helping them evolve their photography skills. For instance, Panasonic’s new Scene mode, Peripheral Defocus, lets users take a photo where the foreground is in focus and background is blurred – or vice versa. This popular effect can be intimidating for a beginner, but in the Peripheral Defocus mode, by simply selecting the objects to be blurred and focused using the camera’s keypad, it is simple for photographers of any level.

Also, helping to make the LUMIX GF1 more approachable, Panasonic’s popular iA (Intelligent Auto) mode, a system of technologies that engage automatically – no setting changes needed – allows for intuitive use when shooting still or video images. While shooting video, iA activates Panasonic’s O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization), which helps reduce video-blurring due to handshake. In addition, Face Detection automatically detects a face in the frame and adjusts focus, exposure, contrast, and skin complexion on it so it always turns out beautifully. Intelligent Exposure continually checks the ambient light level and adjusts the exposure setting as conditions change to prevent blown highlights and blocked shadows. For still photos, the iA system encompasses: Face Recognition (up to six faces can be registered); Auto Focus (AF) Tracking; Mega O.I.S.; Intelligent ISO; Intelligent Exposure; and Intelligent Scene Selector.

The LUMIX GF1 also comes fully-equipped with a built-in flash and a large, 3.0-inch Intelligent LCD with a wide viewing angle and a 460,000-dot resolution. The Intelligent LCD offers automatic backlight control, which when combined with its high-resolution, helps improve visibility in all light environments – from sunny outdoors to low-light interior settings.

New for the LUMIX G Series, the LUMIX GF1 is compatible with an optional Live View Finder (DMW-LVF1), which provides the full-time live view function boasting 100% field of view regardless of the attached lens. To further expand the LUMIX G Series system, Panasonic Micro Four Thirds digital cameras can be used with Four Thirds System interchangeable lenses via an optional mount adaptor DMW-MA1 and with the prestigious Leica M/R lenses using Panasonic’s DMW-MA2M DMW-MA3R. These adapters give the user access to the unlimited number of lens properties.

The LUMIX GF1’s sensor technology offers the best of both worlds - the superior image quality of a CCD sensor, and the low-power consumption of a CMOS sensor. Advanced technology makes it possible to read four channels of data simultaneously, helping the LUMIX GF1 deliver 60 frames-per-second full-time Live View images, while maintaining fine detail and rich gradation. The LUMIX GF1’s Venus Engine HD records stunning high-resolution 12-megapixel images using its advanced Live MOS Sensor. This sophisticated LSI circuit separates chromatic noise from luminance noise and applies the optimal noise reduction to each, helping to capture clear and beautiful images even when shooting at high ISO levels.

The contrast AF system adopted in the LUMIX GF1 is not only accurate, but also very quick – approximately 0.3 seconds with the LUMIX G H-FS014045 lens. Users can choose from a wide-range of AF modes, including multiple-area AF with up to 23 focus areas; 1-area AF with a selectable focus area; Face Detection; and AF Tracking. The LUMIX GF1 also has a Quick AF function that begins focusing as soon as the user aims the camera - without pressing the shutter button halfway.

As with all Panasonic LUMIX G Series digital cameras, the LUMIX GF1 is equipped with a highly-effective Dust Reduction system. Thus, if dust gets inside the camera (when changing lenses), Panasonic’s Dust Reduction system addresses this problem by placing a supersonic wave filter in front of the Live MOS sensor which vertically vibrates around 50,000 times per second, thus repelling the dust.

The content captured on the LUMIX GF1 can easily be viewed on a Panasonic VIERA® HDTV by simply inserting the SD/SDCH Memory Card into the VIERA’s SD/SDHC Memory Card slot or into a Panasonic DIGA Blu-ray Disc Player. Alternatively, an optional mini HDMI cable can be used to output still and motion images recorded with the LUMIX DMC-GF1 directly to the TV for easy VIERA Link™ operation, with control of playback functions, such as slideshows, managed from the VIERA HDTV’s remote control.

The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GF1 will be available in early October 2009 with the option of two kits – both with a suggested retail price (SRP) of $899.95. One kit option includes the newly-announced LUMIX G 20mm/F1.7 ASPH, a compact and lightweight “pancake” lens, while the other kit features the LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm/F3.5-5.6 ASPH/MEGA O.I.S. The optional Live View Finder DMW-LVF1 has an SRP of $199.95; while the DMW-MA2M and DMW-MA3R both have an SRP of $249.95. All new accessories will also be available in early October.
